Pruning vs Trimming — What's the Difference?

Most homeowners use the terms interchangeably, but they're different jobs with different goals.

Trimming is about shape, size, and clearance — keeping branches off the roof, out of utility lines, and looking maintained. Pruning is about the tree's internal health — removing dead and diseased wood, improving structure, eliminating branches that are crossing, rubbing, or creating weak attachment points.

A properly pruned tree handles Marietta's summer storms significantly better than one left to grow unchecked. Dead wood and weak branch unions are what fail when the wind picks up. Taking care of those before a storm is always cheaper than dealing with the aftermath.

What Our Pruning Includes

• Dead wood removal — dead branches are a hazard and a disease pathway; removing them is the first priority

We don't top trees. Topping removes the main branches and forces a flush of weak, fast-growing shoots that are poorly attached and more hazardous than what was there before. It's a shortcut that causes long-term damage. Proper pruning achieves size control without those consequences.

Best Time to Prune Trees in Marietta

For most species in the Marietta area, late winter — January through February — is the ideal pruning window. Trees are dormant, so they're not wasting energy trying to push new growth at the same time they're healing a wound. Cuts made just before spring flush close faster, and the pests and fungi that spread disease are less active in winter.

Species exceptions worth knowing:

• Oaks — prune in winter to avoid attracting beetles that spread oak wilt
• Crepe myrtles — prune in late winter before new growth; avoid the common "crepe murder" topping practice
• Spring-flowering trees (dogwoods, redbuds) — prune immediately after they flower, not before

Hazardous, dead, or storm-damaged branches are the exception — those should be removed as soon as possible regardless of season.

Pruning Situations We See Regularly in Marietta

Marietta's tree canopy varies a lot depending on which part of the city you're in, and the pruning needs follow that pattern.

East Cobb has some of the oldest residential lots in Cobb County — neighborhoods around Lassiter, Pope, and the Johnson Ferry and Roswell Road corridors have mature oaks, sweet gums, and tulip poplars that have been growing for 40–60 years. These trees are large enough that co-dominant stems, included bark, and wide-spread canopies hanging over structures are common. Structural pruning and cabling assessments are frequent calls in this area.

West Cobb properties along the Lost Mountain and Macland Road corridors tend to have heavier pine coverage — loblolly and Virginia pine that have grown dense on larger lots. Canopy thinning and deadwood removal are the standard here, especially after pine beetle pressure has worked through an area and left standing dead wood.

South Cobb — Smyrna, Mableton, and the Vinings hillside neighborhoods — has older established trees in tight spaces. Vinings in particular has mature trees on steeply graded lots above the Chattahoochee where a pruning cut gone wrong can result in a limb landing on a retaining wall or neighbor's property. We plan these jobs carefully before the first cut.

Central Marietta and the Square area has a mix of ornamental and shade trees in tighter residential and commercial settings — crepe myrtles that frequently get topped (we fix that), Bradford pears that need removal more than pruning, and street trees adjacent to utility lines that require clearance work coordinated with the city.
